Enel Green Power Espana has started construction of three solar farms in the Extremadura region of Spain with a combined capacity of 127MW.
A total of €100m will be invested in the Baylio, Dehesa de los Guadalupes and Furatena projects, which will each have installed capacity over 42MW.
The trio are expected to be operational by the end of 2019 and will consist of 372,000 photovoltaic modules.
They will generate over 240 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year, the company said.
Enel added that it will use several innovative construction processes and equipment during construction.
These include using drones for topographical surveys and smart tracking of components, such as panels, transformers and cables.
Digital platforms and software will also be utilised to oversee project progress.
“These practices and tools will enable faster, more accurate and reliable data collection, enhancing construction quality and facilitating communication between on-site and off-site teams,” Enel said.
Enel Green Power head Antonio Cammisecra said: “The start of construction of our first solar parks in Extremadura represents an important milestone for our group and the country itself as we continue to expand our PV footprint into new areas of the important Spanish market while helping the country to achieve its renewable goals.
“These projects are the latest examples of our commitment to further diversify the Spanish generation mix by leveraging on the wealth of solar resources in the region, where we are also determined to bring our global technological expertise, and initiatives aimed at boosting the sustainability of our construction site.”
The three facilities are part of seven PV projects totalling 339MW that were awarded to Enel Green Power Espana in Spain’s July 2017 renewables tender.
The remaining projects include one in Murcia, for which construction started in September, and three more in Extremadura.
