EnBW has started construction of a service station next to Emden Airport for the 609MW Hohe See and Albatros offshore wind complex in the German North Sea.
The developer said 40 service technicians will be flown from the two-storey base by helicopter to the projects once they are operational at the end of 2019.
EnBW said the service station will comprise offices and social areas covering almost 550 square metres and a storage warehouse for spare parts and tools.
Construction is due to be finished in summer 2019 when the first employees will move in.
Technicians will work 14-day shifts at the wind farms and then be given 14 days leave. They will live and work on the Bibby Wavemaster Horizon vessel, which is currently being built in Romania.
EnBW added that the Emden service team will also be responsible for the maintenance of the planned 900MW He Dreiht wind farm, which is expected to go live in 2025.
EnBW head of offshore operations Michael Splett said: “We were convinced by the arguments in favour of Emden. The location and infrastructure make it ideal as a base from which to maintain our North Sea wind farms.”
