Vattenfall subsidiary Nuon is teaming up with fast food chain McDonald’s to build electric vehicle charging stations at the latter’s McDrive’s branches in the Netherlands.
The partners are aiming to install some 168 car charging stations in the next three years, Vattenfall said.
Work is due to start at the end of 2018. Each McDrive’s location will have two fast-charging points installed.
Drivers will be able to recharge vehicles within half an hour, with stations spread across the whole country.
The stations will source electricity from wind turbines in the Netherlands, Vattenfall said.
The deal is part of McDonald’s efforts to step up its commitment towards sustainability and the environment at its branches.
McDonald’s director of development, real estate & construction Bas Klaassen said: “We are using our scale of operations to work towards climate-neutral construction, operations and logistics.”
The number of electric vehicles in the Netherlands reached 22,000 at the start of 2018, a 60% year-on-year increase, Vattenfall said.
Nuon director of e-mobility Pieter van Ommeren said: “For all Dutch motorists to be able to drive electric, a good infrastructure with sufficient easily-accessible charging points is essential.”
