Almost 30% of UK electricity was generated from renewables last year, up from 24.5% in 2016, according to government figures.
The latest Digest of UK Energy Statistics confirms that clean power accounted for 29.3% of UK electricity in 2017, with more than half coming from wind power.
Onshore wind generated 8.6% and offshore 6.2%, the figures show. Total wind generation accounted for 11% in 2016.
The increases were down to more capacity, greater load factors and higher wind speeds, the government said.
RenewableUK executive director Emma Pinchbeck said: “Today’s record figures demonstrate how fast renewable energy is transforming the way we generate power to create an energy system fit for the future.
“This is a radical shift, and we will see ever more low-cost renewables meeting flexible demand from homes, electric vehicles and new manufacturing processes and industries.”
