The Scottish government is planning to set up a publicly-owned, not-for-profit energy company dedicated to renewable energy.
Scottish National Party leader and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon (pictured) told the party’s October conference that the company would have no shareholders.
“Energy would be bought wholesale or generated here in Scotland – renewable, of course – and sold to customers as close to cost price as possible,” she said.
Sturgeon added that more details would be revealed when the government publishes its energy strategy, which is expected to be published before the end of the year.
Scottish Renewables chief executive Claire Mack said: “A publicly-owned energy company could play an important part in adding value to existing support schemes and addressing specific market failures.”
