The removal of Cape Sharp Tidal’s OpenHydro turbine in Canada’s Bay of Fundy is set to be further delayed due to an entanglement around the 2MW device’s foundation.
OpenHydro has determined there is a line, possibly a mooring line or other marine line, around the turbine system and tangled around the subsea base tubes.
Cape Sharp Tidal spokeswoman Stacey Pineau said: “They are currently working to determine the best approach for removing it and working during this tidal window to determine how to remove the line in a way that is safe for the crew and doesn’t result in damage to the turbine.”
It is possible the retrieval work will extend into future tidal windows, she added.
The turbine was disconnected from the transmission cable at the Nova Scotia FORCE berth on April 21.
Cape Sharp Tidal is retrieving the whole turbine system to make adjustments and upgrades to components in the OpenHydro turbine control centre.
The device was deployed at FORCE last November.
