PassivSystems is to install cloud-based energy management systems in homes and businesses on the Isles of Scilly as part of the Hitachi Europe-led Smart Energy Islands project.
The company said the technology will help deliver the “flexibility required for a low-carbon energy system”.
The £10.8m project, part financed by £8.6m from the European Regional Development Fund, aims to reduce the island’s reliance on fossil fuels, boost the use of renewable technologies and increase the number of low-carbon vehicles on the island.
PassivSystems chief executive Colin Calder said: “Our scalable cloud-based energy management platform will be integrated with a range of domestic and commercial renewable technologies, allowing islanders to reduce their reliance on imported fossil fuels, increase energy independence and lower their carbon footprint.”
Moixa Technology is also involved in the project, which could help contribute to energy system savings of up £4.4bn, according to a UK government report by the Council for Science and Technology.
The report said smart technologies and energy storage systems could contribute an estimated £5.1bn to UK GDP by 2050.
