Balance of plant contractor Jones Bros has completed the construction of RES’ 17-turbine Garreg Lwyd wind farm in Powys.
Upon full operation in April, the 30.6MW Garreg Lwyd will be capable of providing sufficient renewable energy to meet the average needs of more than 26,000 homes – equivalent to nearly 40% of all the homes in Powys.
Jones Bros initially started work in January 2016 of the wind farm located between Felindre and Llanbadarn Fynydd.
The project is Jones Bros’ first large contract with RES.
The project has involved a major enabling works package, including the building of a 3.5km track up to the wind farm site and a substation.
Jones Bros Civil Engineering regional manager Geraint Thomas said: “Work has progressed extremely well at the site, despite some challenging weather conditions.
“We have also completed work to widen laybys and the building of a relief road at Newtown to accommodate the turbine deliveries.”
Once operational, Garreg Lwyd will contribute at least £153,000 per year to the local community via the Local Electricity Discount Scheme and a community benefit fund.
Jones Bros workers are expected to remain on site until the end of March as they carry out reinstatement works.
