LM Wind and Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) have designed new blade tips for offshore wind turbines that they claim can increase production by up to 6%.
The duo said a newly-designed zigzag shape “increases turbulence in the boundary of the wake which increases the yield of offshore wind farms”.
A blade featuring the new tip was tested on a 2.5MW turbine at ECN’s test centre at Wieringermeer and returned higher power production of between 2% and 6%.
“Great results are encouraging to continue designing models and demonstrating blade tips. Together we aim to lower costs of wind energy,” said ECN’s Ozlem Ceyhan-Yilmaz.
