Allete Clean Energy has signed a power purchase agreement with Montana-Dakota Utilities to sell the electricity from the 42.5MW Thunder Spirit 2 wind farm in North Dakota.
The 25-year deal will secure the electricity generated by 13 to 16 new turbines, which will take the total capacity at the Thunder Spirit site near Hettinger to about 150MW.
The agreement includes an option for Montana-Dakota to buy the project once it’s completed, the utility said.
It is expected to start operating in December 2018.
Allete commissioned the first Thunder Spirit facility in December 2015 and sold it to the MDU Resources Group unit the following month.
