GE’s power conversion business unit is to provide Chinese manufacturer XEMC Windpower with its 5MW MV7000 converter for use in the offshore wind sector.
The US company said the medium voltage converter provides less loss compared with low-voltage counterparts, which is of “utmost importance when the wind farms are located far away from the shores”.
All the converters will be manufactured at GE’s factory in Shanghai, the company added.
GE Power Conversion chief commercial officer Francesco Falco said: “We are confident that GE’s local presence and reliable solution will provide our customers with considerable value.”
