The first stage of the 210MW Mesquite Solar 3 solar facility has come online in Arizona supplying electricity to 14 US Navy and Marine Corps installations in California.
The remaining three blocks of the project are scheduled for completion by year-end, when the facility will be fully operational, the US Navy said.
The project has been developed by Sempra US Gas & Power and supplies power to the Western Area Power Administration on behalf of the US Navy.
The supply deal represents the largest purchase of renewable energy ever made by a federal entity, the US Navy added.
