Dominion Virginia Power is to build a 21MW solar plant at the US Navy’s Oceana air station in Virginia Beach.
The facility is expected to be completed and operational in late 2017.
The Navy will receive electricity from the project in exchange for the 100 acres of land that will house the 179,000 solar panels, Dominion said.
The project is the second solar collaboration between Dominion and the US Navy, following the completion of the 25MW Morgans Corner plant in Pasquotank County, North Carolina last year.
