Siemens has unveiled an upgraded version of its DinoTail low noise blade add-on that is inspired by the silent flight of owls.
The DinoTail add-on will feature a combed teeth structure that mimics an owl wing’s trailing edge fringe.
The concept reduces the aerodynamic noise from the trailing edge of the blade significantly, Siemens said.
Serial manufacturing will start soon as part of the low noise equipment of the company’s new SWT-3.3-130LN turbine.
It will also be applied at future models, largely replacing the first generation of DinoTail on onshore machines.
“In our wind tunnel measurements and field tests, the combed teeth showed a substantial reduction in wind turbine noise at all wind speeds,” Siemens Wind Power key expert for aeroacoustics Stefan Oerlemans said.
“This structure that was inspired by owl wings does not compromise the aerodynamic performance.”
