The outlook for the UK offshore wind industry remains strong, despite uncertainties after the British vote to leave the European Union.
WindEurope chief executive Giles Dickson said the UK government remains committed to the offshore wind industry.
Dickson said about 1GW a year of offshore wind will be added over the coming years under the country’s plans to support the industry.
He was speaking at the WindEurope Summit in Hamburg at the opening press conference on Tuesday.
“Unlike most countries in Europe, the UK needs to build new power generation capacity… it is investing in new nuclear while at the same time the current government has signalled that 1GW of offshore wind will be added every year,” he said.
EU commissioner Maroš Šefcovic said the UK will be missed from European discussions on energy policy.
However, Šefcovic, who heads up the block’s energy union efforts, said EU leaders are awaiting the specific details on Brexit before deciding on future energy policy for renewables with the UK.
