Nexans has confirmed it has been selected by VBMS to supply 66kV cables for EDF’s 41.5MW Blyth demonstration offshore wind farm in the UK.
The company will supply inter-array cables and provide the subsea connection between the offshore turbines and the onshore grid.
The project will be the first to use 66kV links.
Nexans said the 66kV subsea cable will be manufactured and tested at its specialist factory in Hanover, Germany, before it is supplied in one length in 2017.
The related connectors will be manufactured by Nexans Power Accessories in Erembodegem in Belgium, and have been developed from well-established 33kV technology, the company said.
Nexans director of medium voltage submarine activity Matthias Kirchner said: “Nexans recently completed its qualification for 66kV XLPE insulated submarine cable systems as part of the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator programme.”
