Eon has started building the 278MW Twin Forks wind farm in Illinois.
The $500m project in Macon County is expected to start operating by the end of next year, the German utility said.
It will comprise 139 V110 2MW turbines supplied by Vestas.
The wind farm will be the company’s third in the state, taking total capacity to 578MW.
Overall, Eon operates more than 3.1GW of renewable energy plants across the US.
“Turning dirt and getting started on construction is always an exciting time for us, as it marks the next step in a lengthy development process,” Eon North America chairman Patrick Woodson said.
“Eon’s wind farms not only produce clean, renewable power, but create jobs, give farmers and land owners additional sources of income, and help local officials improve schools and other critical public services.”
