Deepwater Wind has hit the home stretch at the 30MW Block Island offshore wind project in Rhode Island.
Fred Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up Brave Tern installed the fourth turbine yesterday and is preparing to erect the fifth and final GE Haliade 150 6MW machine at the site, about 3 miles southeast of Block Island.
Rough weather slowed construction recently but Deepwater expects to wrap up turbine installation within days.
Two Montco Offshore jack-ups, the Caitlyn and the Paul, are ferrying towers and blades from the Port of Providence and assisting with installation.
Meanwhile, lift boat Michael Eymard is installing cable protection on the 20-mile subsea transmission cable linking Block Island to the mainland. National Grid contractors are continuing to work on onshore cable and interconnection facilities.
Deepwater expects to spend a couple of months commissioning and testing the wind farm with first power anticipated in November.
