Fred Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up Brave Tern has completed mobilization in Denmark for installation of the pioneering 30MW Block Island wind project in the US.
Crews welded large steel structures on deck to elevate and support the nacelles for the transatlantic voyage to Rhode Island. The vessel is on route to GE’s facility in Saint Nazaire, France, where it will load up five Haliade 150 6MW nacelles.
Brave Tern has also been fitted with the ZephIR Lidar 300 to deliver real-time wind information.
Towers and blades already have been delivered to the Port of Providence. Developer Deepwater Wind plans to start turbine installation in August.
Meanwhile, Mobro Marine vessel Big Max has started laying the inter-array cable. The export cable to Block Island and 20-mile transmission line to the mainland have been completed.
Offtaker National Grid is continuing work on substations and interconnection facilities on Block Island and the mainland.
Deepwater expects to commission Block Island in late 2016.
