Shadow energy minister Alan Whitehead has become the latest spokesman to quit in protest at Labour party helmsman Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
In his resignation letter, the member for Southampton Test said he was unable to grant Corbyn his “complete loyalty”, adding he would continue to “work hard on energy and climate change policy from the backbenches”.
The MP was responsible for transmission and distribution in his shadow energy minister brief.
Whitehead is the fourth Labour party energy spokesperson to have moved in the past 24 hours. Only Labour’s upper house energy minister Lord Grantchester remains.
Shadow energy and climate change secretary Barry Gardiner has replaced Lisa Nandy, while former shadow minister for energy markets Clive Lewis was promoted by Corbyn to the Labour front bench as shadow defence secretary.
Labour has yet to appoint a new shadow energy minister for transmission and distribution, shadow climate change minister or shadow minister for energy markets.
