DECC could miss the end-June deadline for setting the level of the fifth carbon budget following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union.
The budget will set the cap on UK emissions for the period 2028-2032. By law it must be legislated by the end of the month.
The department, however, could not confirm the legislation would be in place.
A spokesperson for DECC told reNEWS: “We are looking to make an announcement shortly.”
The Committee on Climate Change recommended to DECC that the budget be set to require a 57% reduction in emissions from 1990 to 2030.
DECC is also due to publish plans by the end of the year on how the UK will meet its carbon commitments.
The spokesperson added: “There will be no immediate changes and the government will continue working to deliver its agenda.
“DECC is committed to making sure consumers have secure, affordable and clean energy now and in the future.”
