Shadow energy and climate change secretary Lisa Nandy has resigned in protest at Labour helmsman Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
In a joint statement with shadow work and pensions secretary Owen Smith, the Wigan MP said she was stepping down from the shadow cabinet with “huge sadness”.
“We had hoped to leave that meeting with the confidence to continue to support the leadership in bringing the Labour party together from within the shadow cabinet,” they said.
“During the course of the meeting it became clear that this would not be possible.”
Former shadow minister for energy markets Clive Lewis has been promoted by Corbyn to the Labour front bench as shadow defence secretary.
Shadow minister for climate change Barry Gardiner and shadow minister for generation and transmission Alan Whitehead remain in post.
