Ofgem has granted a licence for the Northconnect interconnector between Scotland and Norway.
The £1.3bn Northconnect project will join the National Grid to Norway via a 650km underwater power cable in order to help facilitate increased renewables penetration in both countries.
It will link between the Peterhead substation at Boddam in Aberdeenshire to the Sima substation at Eidfjord in Norway.
The partners – Agder Energi, E-CO, Lyse and Vattenfall – aim to begin operations in 2022.
WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said: “If the UK and the rest of Europe are to move to a 100% renewable future then greater use of interconnectors is a sensible way forward.”
