A group of Dutch companies and research institutes have unveiled a plan to lower the cost of offshore wind to €0.07 per kWh by 2030.
The GROW innovation programme will spend at least €100m on research, development and demonstration projects over the next five years to reach this goal, the consortium said.
At such a price, offshore wind will compete with other renewable and traditional energy sources without the need for any subsidies, it said.
The first projects of the programme, which will help introduce innovations to the market, are expected to start in the third quarter.
The previous five-year research programme, comprising 13 Dutch partners, helped bring down the cost of offshore wind by 20%, according to the new group.
Members comprise Delft Offshore Turbine, Deltares, ECN, Eneco, Lagerwey, LM Wind Power, Royal IHC, RWE, Seaway Heavy Lifting, Shell, Sif, TenneT, TNO, TU Delft, Van Oord and Volker Stevin.
