Photovoltaic cell developer Solar Frontier has commenced commercial production at its 150MW Tohoku facility in Japan.
The Tokyo company said the new plant in Miyagi Prefecture is more efficient, requiring just two-thirds of the investment and manpower of its main 900MW Kunitomi Plant.
It can also produce a solar panel in just a third of the time required at the other plant, the company said.
Solar Frontier, a fully owned subsidiary of Showa Shell Sekiyu, started building the new thin film solar cell plant in December, 2013. It aims to provide solar panels with an output of at least 180 watts when the plant reaches peak production.
