Dong Energy is starting consultation as part of the planning process for the 2.4GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm, which is to be located 120km off the Yorkshire coast.
The Danes expect to submit a consent application for the project, which would be the world’s largest offshore wind farm, in 2018.
If successful, construction is anticipated to take place between 2022 and 2025, Dong said.
Hornsea 3 is located to the east of the 1.2GW Hornsea 1 and 1.8GW Hornsea 2 projects and covers approximately 696 square km.
Dong took a final investment decision in February to build Hornsea 1.
Hornsea 2 has completed the examination phase of the application for a consent, and awaits a decision from the Secretary of State in June.
Dong Energy UK country chairman Brent Cheshire said: “Hornsea 3 is a huge infrastructure project which, if built out to full capacity, would be the world’s largest offshore wind farm and potentially twice the size of Hornsea 1.
“Moving forward with consultation for Hornsea 3 really underlines our commitment to the UK offshore wind industry.”
