French energy giant Total has become a founding member of the Terrawatt Initiative, which aims to deploy more 1TW of solar power by 2030.
The non-profit initiative will represent private sector solar energy companies in dialogue with governments and international organisations.
It covers the whole solar photovoltaic value chain from manufacturing cells to installation of residential and commercial rooftop systems.
The Terrawatt Initiative plans to work with the International Solar Alliance, which represents over 120 countries aiming to scale up solar energy worldwide.
It also intends to work with the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Total is a major player in the solar industry through its SunPower affiliate.
Total chairman and chief executive officer Patrick Pouyanne said: “We believe that solar energy is one of the solutions to meet growing electricity demand.
“That’s why we have joined the Terrawatt Initiative to promote deployment of competitive solar energy worldwide.”
Terrawatt Initiative chair Isabelle Kocher said: “We welcome Total among the community of leading companies and organisations from across the world, federated under the Terrawatt Initiative banner, that will help, through constructive dialogue with governments affordable solar power to bring all its benefits to people and economies.”
