A utility in Canada’s far north is seeking expressions of interest for solar and wind energy generation projects.
The Northwest Territories Power Corp wants to supply renewable energy to the North Slave region to supplement existing hydro power plants, which have suffered periodic supply problems due to droughts in the past few decades.
The utility seeks proposals for 5MW to 10MW of wind and 1MW to 10MW of solar production. Projects of 5MW or greater must include integrated energy storage.
The NTPC electrical system is not interconnected to the North American transmission grid and many remote communities are dependent on expensive diesel generation as a primary power source.
The utility serves a population of 44,000 scattered across 33 communities and 1.1 million square kilometers.
The expression of interest closes 8 January and the utility expects to evaluate the submissions by March.
NTPC is also studying a 7MW to 10MW wind project near its Snare hydro plant.
Farther north, engineers have installed a meteorological tower to study the feasibility of a wind project in Inuvik, a town that lies above the Arctic Circle.
