The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has released a draft environmental assessment for an ‘eagle take permit’ for NRG Yield’s 150MW Alta East wind farm in California.
The agency said the project could kill up to three golden eagles over five years without having a significant impact on eagle populations in the area. The company would also have to take steps to protect eagles from turbines and power lines.
FWS has opened a 60-day public comment period.
The wind farm, located in the Tehachapi area north of Los Angeles, started commercial operation in 2013. It consists of 48 turbines on 2600 acres of private and Bureau of Land Management public land.
