A2Sea jack-up Sea Installer has constructed the first of 32 MHI Vestas 8MW turbines at Dong Energy’s 258MW Burbo Bank 2 offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
It is the first time the 195-metre tall V164 turbines have been used in an offshore wind farm, Dong said.
The 80-metre blades are also the first locally-built components to be installed at a UK offshore wind farm, said the company.
The components were designed, tested and manufactured on the Isle of Wight and assembled at an MHI Vestas pre-assembly facility in Belfast.
The project is a joint partnership between Dong (50%), PKA (25%) and Kirkbi (25%).
Project director Claus Bøjle Møller said: “The installation of this world-first technology shows Dong Energy is really leading the way in offshore wind energy.”
Burbo Bank installation will run through autumn and the wind farm is expected online around the end of the year.
