ABB has secured an $80m contract to supply an export cable for the 274MW Rentel offshore wind farm off the coast of Belgium.
The Swiss outfit said today it had booked the order for a 40km 220kV AC cable which will have a capacity up to 300MW.
Power will come ashore near Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast with ABB also slated to install the wire.
ABB’s power grids president Claudio Facchin said: “The Rentel wind farm cable link will help bring clean wind power to the people of Belgium. It is another example of ABB technologies that enable the integration of renewable energy and lower the environmental impact, which is an integral element of the company’s Next Level strategy.”
Developer Rentel has lined up Siemens as its preferred bidder for the supply and installation of 42 of wind turbines on the project. SWT 7MW 154 machines are expected to be installed.
Construction is expected to start in 2017-2018, with project financing of €1.25bn scheduled to be completed next year. First power is due in 2018.
