ABB has won a contract to supply transformers for the 8.25MW turbines at Dong Energy’s 330MW Walney 3 East offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
The engineering giant will provide 40 of the 9.7MVA units specially designed to fit inside the door frame of the MHI Vestas turbines.
The kit will weigh around 30% less than a similar standard transformer, said the Swiss company.
“These transformers are specially designed to meet the specific application needs of the most powerful wind turbines,” said ABB Power Grids division president Claudio Facchin.
Work at the 660MW Walney 3 complex is due to kick off in 2017. Siemens is providing turbines for Walney West.
