ABB has landed a $250m deal to supply a 220kV export cable at Dong Energy’s 1.2GW Hornsea 1 offshore wind farm off the Yorkshire coast.
The Swiss engineering giant will supply alternating current (AV) submarine cable systems for the project which will be some 120km from shore.
The cable will be fabricated by ABB at its Karlskrona facility in Sweden, it said today.
It is expected that a mid-point reactive compensation substation will be built to facilitate the link which will be one of the largest HVAC wires ever commissioned, as first reported by subscriber-only reNEWS.
ABB’s power grids division president Claudio Facchin said: “High-voltage cable links are playing a key role in transmitting clean power to millions of people, efficiently and reliable. This is another example of how ABB technologies enable the integration of renewable energy and lower environmental impact, a key element of the company’s Next Level strategy.”
Hornsea project director Duncan Clark added: “We look forward to continuing to work together with the ABB on the safe and timely execution of the project.”
Siemens is already in-situ as headline hardware supplier with its 7MW platform lined up for early 2019 delivery ahead of commissioning in 2020 at the site.
