Siemens has awarded UK engineers Babcock a contract to build two offshore transformer modules for SSE’s 588MW Beatrice wind farm off the Scottish coast.
The transformers, each capable of handling 300MW of capacity, will be delivered by the company’s Rosyth yard on the Firth of Forth during the first half of 2018, Babcock said.
The deal, first reported exclusively in reNEWS in summer, will involve at least 60 skilled workers. Beatrice is scheduled to start operating in 2019.
Jackets for the innovative units are expected to be produced under subcontract, with Scottish yards again in the running.
The hardware will be installed some 13km off the Caithness coast for lead transmission contractor Siemens T&D.
“The skills and experience our people bring to the energy sector have been recognised by Siemens and that can only be a positive thing for our company, our employees and the long-term future of our Rosyth facility as Babcock continues to build a solid reputation and a significant presence in the offshore energy sector,” Babcock managing director for energy and marine services Ian Donnelly said.
