The Belgian government is to increase the size of the country’s second offshore wind zone where about 1700MW are to be commissioned by 2026.
State Secretary for Social Fraud, Privacy and the North Sea Philippe de Backer wrote on his website that the new zone will now be 285 square kilometres instead of the previously planned 221 square km.
He added that the government plans to launch a zero-subsidy tender to guarantee the best price for the consumer.
Belgium will have a total of 2.3GW of installed offshore wind capacity in 2020.
The 369.6MW Norther project, developed by Elicio, Eneco, and Mitsubishi Corp subsidiary DGE, is currently under construction and scheduled to be commissioned next summer.
Offshore installation works at the 219MW Northwester 2 and at Otary’s 487.2MW Seamade wind farms will kick off next year. Northwester 2 is being developed by Parkwind, Colruyt, InControl and TTR.
