A new technology park for the marine renewables and offshore wind energy sector will be built in the French city of Biarritz.
The announcement was made at today’s opening session of industry conference Seanergy in the French city by local authorities.
“We are hoping to set up the Ocean Start cluster before this summer and to get colleagues from other regions such as the Pays de la Loire and Brittany on board,” said regional council president Alain Rousset.
“Humanity is still facing three major adventures: space, health and the ocean – and we want to get our share of the blue growth,” he added.
The new structure will be eligible for European subsidies and will also include companies from other sectors such as marine risk management and coastal leisure activities.
The region has also announced it will shortly set up an investment fund for marine renewables and offshore wind energy.
“Our city has been involved in the marine renewables sector for decades and we want to take part in this formidable cultural, economic, ecological and human adventure,” said Biarritz mayor Michel Veunac.
Up to 3000 visitors are expected at the Seanergy marine renewables and offshore wind conference which is taking place today and tomorrow.
