British Wind Energy has been cleared to install a pair of “prototype” turbines at its 252MW Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
The developer was offered grid capacity by regulator BNetzA following a call for applications in 2016 that could have totalled up to 50MW.
Deutsche Bucht will be boosted to 268.4MW with the addition of two 8.4MW turbines, which will be installed at locations left redundant when individual hardware capacity was boosted last year.
MHI Vestas is preferred supplier at the wind farm and is also expected to supply the additional turbines.
The “prototype” element could refer to innovative foundation designs. British Wind declined to comment.
Three other applications for prototypes did not make the cut. Further opportunities will not be made available before 2021.
