Prysmian’s new cable-laying vessel Monna Lisa has begun installing the first submarine cable for the Coastal Virginia offshore wind project (CVOW).
Dominion Energy is developing the 2.6GW project, which is the largest offshore wind farm under construction in the United States.
The 171-metre-long Monna Lisa vessel (pictured) joined Prysmian’s fleet earlier this year and is designed for laying power cables in water depths of up to 3000 metres.
Prysmian hailed the start of cable-laying work at CVOW as a new milestone for the vessel.
“This marks a concrete step forward in building a more sustainable future, as Prysmian continues to support the global energy transition with cutting-edge high-voltage submarine cable solutions,” the company added.
The CVOW offshore wind farm is being built 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach.
When fully constructed in 2026, the project will deliver renewable energy to as many as 660,000 customers at peak output.
