California state regulators have approved almost $43m in grant funding for the state’s ports for the development of a floating offshore wind sector.
The grants went to five different ports.
The Port of Long Beach will receive $20m for planning and engineering assessments related to Pier Wind, the port’s proposed offshore wind hub.
Humboldt Bay Harbour will receive $18.75m for its proposed heavy lift terminal.
Port San Luis Harbour will receive $3m toward feasibility studies of the port’s suitability as an operations and maintenance terminal for offshore wind.
The ports of Oakland and Richmond each received $750,000 for their own studies.
California has an ambitious goal of 25GW of offshore wind by 2045, and the state’s energy commission adopted the AB 525 strategic plan with a road map for an additional 7-10GW.
