The port of Cuxhaven, a centre of offshore wind activity in Germany, has expanded with a new berthing space and new ramp.
Lower Saxony officials completed berth 9.3 with a dimension of 115 by 55 metres which will allow for heavy loads to be delivered directly to roll-on, roll-off vessels.
The quays at Cuxhaven are now 1340 metres long with water depths of up to 11.6 metres.
The new infrastructure will among other duties be used for the transportation and load-out of 20 jacket foundations for Dong Energy’s Borkum Riffgrund 2 wind farm.
The first jackets are expected to arrive from Stettin, Poland, in October. Completion is slated for March 2018.
“The German offshore industry centre in Cuxhaven is already writing success stories and has boosted the offshore industry,” said Lower Saxony Minister of Economics, Labour and Transport Olaf Lies.
“Due to our clever and far-sighted investments in the port infrastructure we have created optimal conditions for the industry in Cuxhaven in time,” he added.
The state of Niedersachsen started expansion works at the port’s offshore terminal after Siemens Gamesa decided to build a wind turbine factory in Cuxhaven.
