Siemens Gamesa bags 112MW offshore wind order in Japan

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has awarded a 15-year charter contract to Cyan Renewables for its first SOV in Asia.

The contract will begin in 2026 and the SOV will be used to service 73 SG 14-222 DD offshore turbines in the 1044MW Hai Long offshore wind farm, located about 50km off the coast of Changhua County in Taiwan.

Cyan Renewables will equip the SOV with state-of-the-art technology, such as Siemens’ BlueDrive PlusC propulsion system, for optimal energy efficiency while minimising its environmental footprint, the company said.

The vessel will also be designed to ensure the safe transportation of service technicians all year round to maintain the giant offshore wind turbines, each featuring a 222-metre diameter rotor and 108-metre blade length, it added.

The construction of the SOV is expected to begin in first quarter 2024.

Head of O&M services at Siemens Gamesa Offshore for Asia-Pacific Henrik Schmidt said: “Cyan Renewables has produced a comprehensive proposal that not only focuses on energy efficiency, but also on local talent development, which is critical to the Hai Long offshore wind projects in Taiwan.

“With their extensive local content knowledge and vessel operational expertise, we look forward to seeing our first SOV in Asia take shape in the coming years.”

Founding chief executive at Cyan Renewables Lee Keng Lin added: “We are grateful for this opportunity to build SGRE’s first SOV in Asia.

“It is an affirmation of our operational excellence and our consistent efforts in local content development.

“This contract also represents a significant milestone for Cyan Renewables as we work towards building up our vessel capacity to support the global offshore wind industry, thereby facilitating the world’s transition to a greener and more sustainable future.”
