The topside for the 900MW DolWin Gamma offshore substation has been loaded out at Nordic Yards dock in Warnemünde, Germany, and will set sail later today.
GE is general contractor on the DolWin3 component, which will be transported by tug to the construction site north of Borkum island, some 162km away from the Dorpen West onshore substation.
The topside will be installed in late June on a split jacket foundation, which was put in place last year in water depths of about 30 metres.
The platform will be located near the operational DolWin Alpha substation with the two units to be connected via an AC cable and a steel bridge.
It is expected to be operational in September 2018, with trial operations starting in June next year.
DolWin3 will serve as grid hub for the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 and 400MW Merkur offshore wind farms.
DolWin Gamma, originally designed by Alstom, is GE’s first HVDC platform.
