Dong signs Isle of Man lease

Dragados Offshore has said it has won a contract to deliver four substation jackets for Dong Energy’s 1.2GW Hornsea 1 offshore wind farm off the Yorkshire coast.

The work includes the procurement and fabrication of the jackets and piles for three offshore substations and a reactive compensation substation, the Spanish company said.

Dragados Offshore said the job will start immediately, with delivery scheduled for early 2018. It added that the deal is a “major milestone” as it “initiates” the company’s activities in offshore wind.

Hornsea 1 will consist of 174 7MW wind turbines connected to three offshore collector substations and a reactive compensation substation.

Meanwhile, Dong has awarded the onshore cable installation contract for Hornsea 1 to J Murphy & Sons.

Murphy said the work involves connecting a new National Grid 400kV substation in Killingholme in northern Lincolnshire to the offshore cables at transition joint bays at Horseshoe Point.

It total, the company will lay over 350,000 metres of 220kV and 400kV cable along a 38km route.

The work is scheduled to start in September with completion due in November 2018.

The cable will be laid in trenches of 1200mm width, with three direct buried cables and one 63mm diameter duct, the company said.

It added that the route covers agricultural farmland, roads, rail and river crossings, canals and ditches, which will be dealt with using either an open cut method or horizontal directional drilling (HDD).

“HDD will be used to cross approximately 50 assets along the route, minimising disruption to the local communities to keep the local infrastructure running as normal,” Murphy said.

Murphy contracts manager Dan Rice said: “We are currently carefully planning all aspects of this project, taking into account all the specifics, including for example the narrow roads within this rural part of Lincolnshire.

“With this in-mind we are developing bespoke drum trailers, so we can ensure the project runs efficiently.

“We are also consulting local people who may be affected by the works and we are getting involved in community and charity events.”

Hornsea 1 is expected to be fully commissioned by 2020.
