Dutch companies including Van Oord and Shell are calling on their government to draw up climate legislation to implement the aims of the Paris agreement.
The 39 businesses, united in a so-called Transition Coalition, said they want the government to prioritise the acceleration of the energy transition needed to reach the country’s 2050 targets.
Dutch energy policy is currently fragmented across several governmental departments, with a focus on the short term, according to the coalition.
The new legislation needs to include specific intermediary objectives in 2030 and 2040, it said.
Transition Coalition also calls on the government to appoint a minister for the economy, climate and energy to ensure policy cohesion, an independent climate authority and a national investment bank that facilitates investments in green innovation and major energy projects.
Other coalition members include DNV GL, DONG Energy, Ecofys, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam, Nuon Vattenfall, Rabobank and Siemens Nederland.
