The first electricity has been generated and delivered to the grid from the 600MW Gemini wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.
The wind farm’s 150 turbines are being installed by Siemens and Van Oord and project is expected to be completed in 2017.
The turbines are being transported from Esbjerg in Denmark to the wind park.
Two 110km cables relay power from the wind park to the shore, where electricity is distributed through the TenneT high voltage grid from Eemshaven.
The Gemini project is being developed by four partners: Canadian independent renewable energy company Northland Power (60%), Siemens (20%), Van Oord (10%) and Dutch utility HVC (10%).
Gemini chief executive officer Matthias Haag said: “Generating its first power is obviously a huge milestone in the project.
“The actual delivery of sustainable electricity is a great reward following the dynamic building period we have had so far.”
