Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has approved the suitability of three areas in the German North Sea for the development of up to 1880MW of new offshore wind capacity.
The sites are designated as N-3.5, N-3.6 and N-7.2 and are located in the German exclusive economic zone.
Determining the suitability of the areas is a prerequisite for the tendering of areas for offshore wind energy by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), BSH said.
Area N-7.2, which covers 58km square and is 85km northwest of the East Frisian Islands, is to be put out to tender for 980MW and auctioned off by the BNetzA in 2022.
Turbines are scheduled to go into operation in 2027.
N-3.5 and N-3.6 cover 120km about 40km north of the East Frisian Islands and could accommodate 900MW of offshore wind capacity, BSH said.
The sites will be auctioned by BNetzA in 2023, with the aim of generating electricity from 2028.
