Germany approves SuedLink section

The German Federal Network Agency has approved the longest SuedLink section to date – the approximately 38-kilometre-long section of the A4.

Once the route has been determined, TenneT can begin work on the construction of the cable route and an intermediate fibre optic station.

The route begins at the border of the districts of Stade and Rotenburg (Wümme) near Farven in the joint municipality of Selsingen.

It ends northeast of Scheeßel. It crosses the Oste and Wümme rivers as well as the A1 motorway.

The decision also includes the approval of an intermediate fiber optic station. This amplifies the signals of the fiber optic cables, which are used for communication during the operation of the underground cable.

The SuedLink is intended to transport offshore wind power from the North Sea to the southern German conurbations on the Main and Neckar rivers.

It consists of two direct current lines that run parallel for much of the route.

Project 3 connects Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein with Großgartach/Leingarten in Baden-Württemberg.

Project 4 runs from Wilster to Bergrheinfeld in Bavaria. Both lines are planned as underground cables.

Only the connections between the substations at the grid connection points and the converters upstream of them are designed as overhead lines.

The transmission system operators TenneT and TransnetBW are responsible for the planning, construction and operation of the SuedLink.
