The last of the 32 turbines at the 200MW Trianel Windpark Borkum 2 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea is now ready for final commissioning.
Danish outfit Global Wind Service has completed the installation of the 6.33MW Senvion turbine.
Jan De Nul had awarded GWS with the installation and completion scope for the 32 Senvion 6.2M152 PU turbines.
The project, also known as Borkum West 2.2, faced some “unforeseen challenges”, said GWS.
The offshore wind project’s installation was initially planned to complete in 2019 but bad weather and the insolvency of Senvion caused delays to the project timetable.
Fred Olsen Windcarrier jack-up Blue Tern had been drafted in carry out the installation of the wind farm’s final 11 turbines, completing this work last month.
GWS said various teams have been working in parallel, both erecting the turbines and performing the electrical and mechanical completion.
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March also added a “whole new dimension” to the project, said GWS.
GWS senior project manager Jokum Bendstrup said: “In the 23 years I have worked in the wind industry, I have never experienced anything like this.
“We have all been dealing with issues we never could have imagined, as the world suddenly changed overnight.
“The team has worked day and night to adjust to ever changing guidelines from the European countries – and I must say that I am truly proud of everybody involved.”
“It is no secret that it has been challenging at times, but I would like to thank everybody involved in the project – both my colleagues from GWS and our partners from Jan De Nul and Trianel” added GWS chief commercial officer Lars Petersen.
