BP is to open a dedicated offshore wind office in the German city of Hamburg.
The company’s senior vice president of offshore wind Matthias Bausenwein made the announcement at WindEnergy Hamburg today.
“We’re excited by this – and will have more to say soon. It’s all part of our commitment to offshore wind,” he said.
Bausenwein said the company already has around 4000 staff in the country in various businesses including petrol stations and refining.
He said BP’s strategy in Germany and the rest of the world, including the UK, is to create an integrated energy business with generation from offshore wind.
Projects would be used to power various outputs such as EV charging and green hydrogen.
Bausenwein pointed out this approach is a core part of the company’s bid in the ongoing Hollandse Kust West 7&8 auction round.
Meanwhile, the ex-Orsted man called on governments to get policy in order to support the sector’s expansion.
He told delegates in Hamburg that capitals need to introduce efficient permitting systems, effective tender designs and simplified grid build outs.
“The world does not have the luxury of waiting years for offshore wind projects to start producing energy,” he said.
