Iberdrola has officially launched construction of the 350MW Wikinger offshore wind farm in the German waters of the Baltic Sea.
Wikinger, which will feature 70 5MW Adwen turbines, was launched in the port of Sassnitz, which is being used as the base port for the €1.4bn project.
Installation of foundations will start in the coming days using the installation vessel Giant 7, which is currently being mobilized in Rostock. The project about 30km off the island of Rügen is due online by the end of 2017.
Iberdrola’s project coordinator for Wikinger Tanis Rey-Baltar said: “Construction is an important milestone and the result of years of planning and research.
“I want to thank the many local and regional companies that have supported us in the previous steps and we have subsequently also in the construction of Wikinger.”
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania energy minister Christian Pegel said: “Today shows two things: the Energiewende is in full swing and in our country this creates a tremendous value.
“Today is a good day for the transformation of energy and for the business location of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.”
Production of the Adwen turbines in Bremerhaven and Stade has already begun.
